Centerbeam flat cars are used to carry very heavy loads of construction related materials. The vertical center truss section connects to the end bulkheads to give the car the ability to carry heavy loads without the bulk and weight that would be necessary with a traditional bulkhead flat design. There are several variations of this car in use today, these are broken down into varieties of the standard truss type using a triangular design and the opera window design using a more solid appearance with oval cutouts.
